2. The context of ethical practice in Social Work It has been frequently noted by commentators that Social work is essentially “a moral enterprise” (see for e.g. Pinker, 1990:14).
This presentation takes as its starting point the idea that in classroom settings, students are clearly able to justify courses of action which they see as ‘ethical’. However once in practice they tend to suspend those same judgements and see overt conformity to the organisational context as paramount.
Our aim in this session is to try to understand and theorise this, as well as seeking to develop teaching strategies which prepare students for these sorts of experiences in practice.
