Traditional Mobile Base Station Deployment • A mobile Base Station consists of two functional elements • REC: Radio Equipment Controller; aka the BBU: Base Band Unit. • RE: Radio Equipment; aka the RRU: Radio Remote Unit or RRH: Remote Radio Head • Traditional base station deployment had RRH and BBU co-located • Large equipment footprint, high power consumption and high deployment costs. • Coaxial cable connected the base station to the antennas at the top of the tower. • 2G networks: The base station is called the BTS, • 3G networks: The base station is called NodeB. • 4G networks : The base station is called eNodeB.
