Topic 7 Sources of Thermal Energy
What types of energy are used for cooking and for heating? Natural gas Electricity
What are the types of forces involved in the production of hydro-electricity Gravity Moving water Turbine Generator
Chemical Energy Burning wood or coal releases thermal energy
Electrical Energy Dams use energy of falling water Fuel-burning (coal) generating stations
Geothermal Energy Is energy that comes from the Earth’s interior Ex. Volcanoes, hot springs & geysers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWrklFuYnb0 HDR (hot, dry rock) Fig. 3.31
Solar Energy Energy from the sun Passive Solar heating- use materials (like concrete) to store energy to release at night Active Solar heating- use fans to release stored energy at night
Wind Energy Is the energy of moving air Ex. windmill
Explain how coal can help in the production of electricity Fig. 3.30 pg.240
What is the use of motor oil? To lubricate the parts so they move easily. This reduces friction and therefore reduces energy required.
Solar Energy There are two basic ways of using solar energy to warm buildings. Name them: Passive Solar Heating Active Solar Heating
Passive Solar Heating Passive solar heating uses the materials in the structure to absorb, store, and release solar energy
Active Solar Heating Active solar heating uses mechanical devices, like fans to distribute stored thermal energy
Solar Home Study the solar home in your booklet and complete the questions that follow
What is the purpose of the ridges on the roof? The ridges absorb the sun’s radiant energy
What type of material should be used to construct the ridges? Black metal material
What role do the pipes play in the operation of the solar home? Thermal energy from the ridge on the roof is transferred to the pipes by conduction. The hot pipes heat and circulate the water contained within them.
Describe how the collected heat is stored and distributed to the interior of the home The collected heat is stored in the hot water tub. It is distrivuted to the interior of the home through heat vents.
Explain how a pump could be used to control the amount of heat distributed throughout the home When the pump is opened, it allows water to flow through the system of pipes. Cooled water is pumped to the roof, where it can be warmed.
What are the main energy resources in Alberta? Fossil fuels
Two examples of fossil fuels Natural Gas Petroleum
Explain the two problems linked with fossil fuels Fossil fuels are a non-renewable resources Greenhouse gases. They trap the heat from the earth
If we keep using the fossil fuels at the current rate… See text pg 245 Fig 3.37
Greenhouse gases What causes the Global Warming of the Earth? -Increased amounts of carbon dioxide and other gases trap heat.
What are the consequences? It can change climatic zones and plant growing abilities, dry up rivers and melt the polar ice cap.
Why are Canadians among the highest producers of greenhouse gases per person? -Canada’s size, small population and cold climate mean that materials have to be transported over large distances.
Congeneration Using waste heat to generate electricity or heat buildings.
