  4. 1- Focus on the TopicA- Predicting Look at the picture, and discuss these questions 1- Where do you buy fruits and vegetables? 2- How do you choose the fruits and vegetables you buy? What do you look for? 3- Read the title of the unit. What do you think it means?

  5. C Preparing To Read. Background Look at the picture on page 123 of a produce section of a grocery store. There are many kinds of organic and regular fruits and vegetables. Use the information in the picture to complete these sentences. Pg. 122 2- Organic apples cost $ 2.49 a pound. 3- Regular pears cost $ 0.99 a pound. 4- Organic pears cost $ 1.59 a pound. 5- Red leaf lettuce costs $ 1.12 each. 6-Green leaf lettuce costs $ 0.99 each. 7- Organic green leaf lettuce costs $ 2.98 each. 8-Organic green leaf lettuce is the most expensive lettuce.

  6. Vocabulary for Comprehension Pg. 123 Read the sentences. Try to understand the underlined words without looking them up in a dictionary. 1- Orange juice really is orange. But many sodas are made with artificial colors. These colors come from chemicals. 2- Sometimes bananas are green and hard. To ripen them, put them in a paper bag. In one or two days, they should be yellow and soft. 3- Some fruits, like apples, grow on trees. Some, like blackberries, grow on bushes. And some, like grapes, grow on vines.

  7. Vocabulary for Comprehension Pg.123 4- Growing your own tomatoes is difficult, but it’s worth the work. Tomatoes from your own garden are better than tomatoes from the store. 5- The old-fashioned way to make ice cream took a lot of time and hard work. Today, the way we make ice cream is fast and easy. 6- Fresh fruit tastes much better than fruit from a can.

Pg. 124 1- You’ll find bananas in the produce section of your supermarket or grocery store. 2- I hate insects! Mosquitoes bite me every time I go outside, and ants get into all the food in my cupboards. 3- Sometimes I have trouble growing vegetables, but I never have trouble growing weeds ! They just take over the garden. 4- Farmers use pesticides and herbicides to kill insects and weeds. 5- Cancer kills millions of people every year. 6- These tomatoes don’t look very nice, but they taste wonderful.

  12. 2 Focus on ReadingA- Reading One: Organic Produce vs. Regular ProduceMr. Green has a newspaper advice column called “ Ask Mr. Green.”People with shopping problems write to him. Read this letter to Mr.Green. The writer asks two questions. How will Mr. Green answer these questions? Pg. 125 Dear Mr. Green: Lately, I see more and more “organic” fruits and vegetables in the supermarkets. I’m confused. Often the organic apples or strawberries aren’t as red or as large as the regular ones. They sometimes have spots or insect holes. Also, organic produce can cost three times as much as regular produce! So, tell me, what exactly are organic fruits and vegetables? And why are they so expensive? Confused Shopper Bakersfield, CA
