What is a G.I.S.T. ? • A research-based reading strategy. • The word “gist” describes the main or essential part of a matter. • This activity forces you to make sense of what you are reading, as you are reading.
How does it work? • As you read a passage, write Baby GIST statements in the margins. • Tell me who the paragraph is about AND what the paragraph is about (who + what) • Each Baby GIST should be 8 or 9 words per paragraph. If the paragraphs are very short, you may combine 2-3 paragraphs and write one Baby GIST statement for those paragraphs.
Due next class period: • Write at least two Baby GIST statements for each column in the excerpt for Act 2, Scene 2 (four statements total). • Identify these dramatic/poetic elements in the excerpt by circling and labeling them: 1 soliloquy, 1 aside, 1 hyperbole, 1 metaphor, 1 personification, and 1 couplet.
