Ancient Estonia Begins from around 8500 BC. Worshipped the spirits of nature. Own gods.
Estonian Crusade One of the last corners ofmedieval Europe to be christianized. Against pagans in Estonia. Estonian commander Lembitu was killed in 1217. 1208-1227- Ancient Estonian fight for independence.
Danish occupation Conquered by Danish king Waldermat II The Danish Army defeated the Estonians at the Battle of Lyndanisse in 1219. The Estonians of Harria started a rebellion in 1343- St. George’s Night Uprising. Sold to Livonian order.
Livonian war During the Livonian war(1558-1583), Estonia was submitted to Swedish control. Southern Estonia briefly came under the control of the Polish-Lithuania Commonwelth.
Russian occupation Russia defeated Sweden in the Great Northern War in 1710. Everything remained mostly German.
Birth of independence 24. February 1918 – birth of Republic of Estonia. German occupation. War of Independence 23 June 1919 – victory overLanderswehr in the Battle of Võnnu. 2 February 1920 – Peace Contract with Russia signed in Tartu. Estonia stayed independent for 22 years. Konstantin Päts – elected in 1938
Lost of independence 1940-1941 - Soviet occupation. 1941-1944 - World War II – German occupation. 1945-1991 – Soviet occupation. Mass deportations took place.
Gaining back independence March 1991 – Referendum was held. 20 August 1991 Estonia declares itself an independent republic. Lennart Meri – Elected in 1992.
European Union Negotiations begin in 1997. Formally invited to join in December 2002. 1 May 2004 – Estonia joined EU 2011 – Currency changed to Euro (€)
