  2. Litotes is an planned understatement using a description opposite of the intended meaning. • Itcan either be used to understate the main point of a statement in a positive or negative way.

  3. Importance: • Tones down a description by using words that allow for a wider range of meaning

  4. Hitting that telephone pole certainly didn’t do your car any good. • “Certainly didn’t do your car any good” • Was horrible for your car • Totaled the front of your car

  5. Overall the flavors of the mushrooms, herbs, and spices combine to make the dish not at all disagreeable to the palate. • “Not at all disagreeable to the palate” • Very appetizing • Quite tasty

  6. When using litotes, do not just use “un-” and the opposing descriptive word.
