Symbols What could Ivan’s pain be a symbol of in the story? What theme does this suggest?
End of chapters 4 and 7 Ivan Ilyich’sfoiled bridge game, at the end of chapter 4, results in a sense that his life is poisoned and at the beginning of a disaster. He begins to be terrified of death. In chapter 7, “nothing did so much to poison [his] last days…as this falseness in himself and in those around him.” What is the falseness that poisons Ivan Ilyich? Is it the source of his illness? Is the falseness related to conformity? Or is it the dawning knowledge that Ivan Ilyich can neither relinquish nor live with his conformist tendencies?
