EVIDENCE Welcome to the Siloam Springs Police Department Evidence Division. You will be submitting evidence items to Evidence/Warrants Specialist Doyle Neal.
Introduction... • The collection and preservation of evidence is the most important single aspect of the investigation of any crime. • The most important thing to insure throughout the entire investigation is the chain of custody. • It is very important to account for the evidence from the time it is collected until it is produced in court.
Agenda... • You will learn: • where evidence supplies are stored • where to submit evidence • how to package evidence • what paperwork to submit with evidence
Supplies... • evidence supplies are kept in a top opening cabinet just inside the Patrol Room on the right
Supplies... • supplies are also located in the bottom drawer of the cabinet
Supplies... • additional supplies are located in • the general area of the open top cabinet • Property Room - just ask the Evidence/ Warrants Specialist
Evidence lockers... • are located in the Patrol Room • there are two refrigerators for blood, urine and sexual assault kits
Evidence lockers... • are in the hallway outside the Evidence Office/Property Room
Evidence lockers... • you will deposit evidence and associated paperwork in the locker and lock the lock
Evidence lockers... • there is a drop box outside the Evidence Office/Property Room
Evidence lockers... • lockers inside the Evidence Office • allow the Evidence/Warrants Specialist to retrieve items from the back of lockers
Evidence packaging... • a copy of the Department’s Evidence Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is kept in the evidence supply cabinet • it gives information on packaging the various types of evidence • drugs • documents • found property • money • weapons • general
Evidence packaging... • the below pictures depict how to package and seal a piece of evidence
Evidence packaging... • you will complete information in pre-stamped blocks on envelopes/boxes • you will initial half on, half off sealing tape • you will label packaged items E-1, E-2, etc.
Supporting paperwork... • The following paperwork is to be submitted with evidence: • Evidence/Property Inventory Form (original and yellow copy) • Note: A separate form is required for each type of evidence – money, drugs, weapons, etc.
Supporting paperwork... • Offense/Incident Report with narrative (copy)
Supporting paperwork... • Arkansas State Crime Laboratory Evidence Submission Form (when applicable)
Property Room... • document, found property, and general evidence items are stored in the main caged area
Property Room... • drug, weapon and money evidence items are stored in a second caged area within the Property Room
Property Room... • bicycles and large items are stored in an off-site storage area
