  4. The chemical symbol for water is H2O. What elements make up water? hydrogen and oxygen

  5. Electrolysis Electrolysis is the breaking apart of water using electricity. When water is broken apart by an electric current, the hydrogen will be attracted to the pencil attached to the negative side of the battery and oxygen will be attracted to the pencil attached to the positive side of the battery.

  6. Observe the lab set up provided to you and sketch it in your journal.

  8. III: Application *After the bubbles begin to form, make a new sketch showing where the bubbles are located. *Label where the oxygen bubbles and the hydrogen bubbles are found.

  12. What is an element? An element is a pure substance that cannot be divided.

  13. What is the correct way to write a chemical symbol? First letter is always a capital letter. If there are 2 letters, the first is a capital and the second in lower case. The symbol is ALWAYS printed, never written in cursive!

  14. Which element is found in the atmosphere, living matter, oceans and in the solid earth? Oxygen!

  15. Which element is only found in the solid earth? Silicon!

  16. How is density calculated? MASS divided by VOLUME
