What is the IELTS The IELTS is an English language test, that is often mandatory for persons who wish to study or settle in a country with a predominantly English -speaking population. The test is designed to evaluate your ability to communicate effectively in English and assesses you on various factors such as listening, reading speaking, and writing. It is considered that a score of 7.0 or higher would be accepted at most universities and it is also the minimum score for Canada immigration. You would be giving the IELTS general if you are reporting scores for immigration, and the IELTS academic if you are reporting scores for admission to a university. IELTS sections The IELTS test, intends to evaluate whether or not you will be able to communicate in English in a day to day scenario, when you immigrate abroad to a country where the primary language of communication is English. The test evaluates you on the following sections.
1. Listening The listening section of the IELTS exam consists of 40 questions, which are divided into four sections. The total time given for listening and answering the questions is 30 minutes and an additional 10 minutes is provided to the students to enable them to transfer the answers to listening answer sheet. 2. Reading The reading section comprises of three passages which are followed by 40 questions which are related to the passages and test your comprehension of the passage you have read. You can attempt the passages in any order you choose, but you must complete the entire section within a 60-minute period. Each question is scored at one mark 3. Speaking The speaking section of the IELTS is not held on the test day but a few days before or after the actual date of the test. It is a one-to-one interview, where you will be given three assignments – talks about yourself, talk about a topic from a cue-card and give a long talk about a selected topic. The three sub-sections are designed to give you an opportunity to showcase your speaking skills in a range of scenarios.
4. Writing The writing section of the IELTS differs for the academic and the general test. Both the tests consist of two main tasks for the writing section. The first task for IELTS -Academic asks the candidates to interpret a diagram that is provided. In the general module, the candidate will be asked to write a letter of about 150 words and you would be provided 20 minutes for the same. The second task is the same for both the general and academic modules and you will be asked to write a response to an argument in 250 words in 40 minutes. This test is designed to evaluate your articulation and expression skills. Who can take the IELTS? Students and individuals who plan to study or work in countries where English is the primary language of communication will be required to take this test in order to prove their ability to communicate in the language. Guidelines for IELTS The IELTS test is of two types -IELTS general and IELTS academic You will need to take the IELTS academic for admission to undergraduate or post-graduate programs in countries like USA, UK and Canada, and you will need to take the IELTS general for satisfying immigration points criteria for immigration to Canada, Australia and New Zealand. You can register for the IELTS test both online and in person at designated registration centers. The test is administered on 48 days in a year by the British council and you can choose any of the dates to give the test. Cost of taking the IELTS The IELTS costs 181 USD or thereabouts to take in India. Results of the IELTS The scores of your IELTS test are reported as an overall scale that from 0-9 bands for all sections together. You will also be provided a score for each of the sections separately to help you gauge your performance in each section.
