  1. Blog: Shaolintemplemi.org A BRIEF HISTORY OF KUNG FU The term Kung Fu is the martial artsstyle, practiced widely in China. It was used by the monks as a technique for staying healthy and for self-defense at the time when they were engaged in their quests for achieving enlightenment. The first Shaolin temple was originally a Buddhist monastery, built in the Henan province of China in 377 A.D. In 527 A.D. Bodhidharma (or Da Mo in Chinese), a Buddhist prince travelled to the temple for acquiring religious teaching. After reaching there, he found that the monks were weak and in poor state of health. In order to find a way to help the monks gain their vitality and strength, Da Mo locked himself within a room for meditation for 9 years. He invented a series of exercises called Yi Jin Jing which helped in developing vitality, strength, and inner energy. This is considered to be the original Shaolin martial arts. Kung Fu is one of the most integral parts of the Chinese culture. The people here have placed great values in the training because they believe it teaches respect, endurance, humility, and morals. A lot of Americans consider Kung Fu to be a single martial art, more like Taekwondo, Aikido, or Judo. On the contrary, Kung Fu in general includes hundreds of different techniques of Chinese martial arts. For example: Long Fist, Eagle Claw, TaijiQuan and many more. You can join classes for martial arts in Detroit to learn all about them. One more misconception relating to Kung Fu is that it’s a "soft" style as compared other "hard" styles like karate. However, each Kung Fu style comprises of both hard as well as soft techniques. Many people also believe that Kung Fu is an outer style while TaijiQuan is an inner style. Whilst most of the Kung Fu styles stresses on external development, they include both internal and external modules. You can learn Kung Fu in Detroit by joining Shaolintemplemi.
