  3. What is pulmonology? • Pulmonology is a field of medicine that focuses specifically on diagnosing and treating disorders of the respiratory system. Subspecialties of pulmonology can include: • interstitial lung disease, which focuses on lung diseases marked by persistent inflammation and scarring • interventional pulmonology, which employs multidisciplinary care to treat airway disorders, lung cancer, and pleural diseases • lung transplantation • neuromuscular disease, which refers to conditions that occur due to respiratory muscle failure • obstructive lung disease, which involves airway narrowing or obstruction • sleep-disordered breathing

  4. Chest Disease • Lung diseases of the pleura include: Pleural effusion: Fluid collects in the normally tiny pleura space between the lung and the chest wall. • Pneumonia or heart failure is usually responsible. If large, pleural effusions can impair breathing, and should be drained. • This disease comes under the broad heading called ” Diffuse Pulmonary ILD” (DPILD), meaning affecting many parts of lung.

  5. WHAT IS BRONCHIAL ASTHMA? • Bronchial asthma, commonly referred to as asthma, is a chronic respiratory disease characterised by the inflammation of the airways of the lungs. • A person suffering from asthma generally exhibits symptoms such as breathlessness, coughing, chest tightness and wheezing.According to the World Health Organization, there are around 15-20 million bronchial asthma patients in India.

  6. What is lung cancer? • Cancer of the lung, like all cancers, results from an abnormality in the body’s basic unit of life, the cell. • Normally, the body maintains a system of checks and balances on cell growth so that cells divide to produce new cells only when new cells are needed. • Disruption of this system of checks and balances on cell growth results in an uncontrolled division and proliferation of cells that eventually forms a mass known as a tumor.

  7. What is Sleep Apnea? • Sleep apnea is a common but serious sleep disorder where your breathing is briefly interrupted when you’re asleep. • If you have sleep apnea, you’re probably not aware of these short breathing pauses that occur hundreds of times a night, jolting you out of your natural sleep rhythm. • All you know is that you don’t feel as energetic, mentally sharp, or productive during the day as you should do.
