  2. 1.1 Learning from Mutt-i-grees Objective: Today you will rationalize and discuss your unique traits, as well as traits of Mutt-i-gree dogs.

  3. Think, Pair & Share • What do you remember learning about Mutt-i-grees from your last teacher? • What do you think we can learn from dogs and from Mutt-i-grees?

  4. Introduction Over the next few months we are going to learn to become more aware– about ourselves and the world around us. We will learn about: • what makes us special • what to do well • the many different feelings • how to be a good friend • to think about other people’s feelings • how to make good decisions

  5. There are approximately 77.5 million dogs owned as pets in the United States; that’s a lot of dogs! 39% (about 1/3) of U.S. households own about one dog. Discussion: How many of you have a dog as a pet? Or other animal for a pet? Unfortunately many Mutt-i-grees dogs live in animal shelters waiting to be adopted. Approximately 6-8 million dogs and cats enter animal shelters each year and about 75% of the dogs in shelters are Mutt-i-grees Animal shelters provide foods, housing and medical care for animals that don’t have homes. These animals need to be adopted into permanent homes where they can receive care and championship. Animal Shelter Video Tour

  6. Activity: Learning by Doing • Each partner team will be assigned to work together to create their own Mutt-i-gree. • Make sure to include all characteristics possible: • length, size, color, name, etc.

  7. Closing Today we learned about the goals of the Mutt-i-grees initiative. We learned that Mutt-i-grees are a unique combination of different kinds of dogs and that many Mutt-i-grees love in animal shelters waiting to be adopted into permanent homes. We also discussed the different kinds of dogs we own or would like to own as pets.
