Theme • THE THEME IN THE BOOK AMOS FORTUNE CENTERS AROUND SLAVERY. • SLAVES ARE PEOPLE WHO WHERE TAKEN FROM THEIR HOMES AND WERE SOLD TO USUALLY RICH PEOPLE WHO WERE TOO LAZY TO DO THEIR OWN WORK. SLAVES ONLY ATE ONCE A DAY, THEY WORKED SIX AND A HALF DAYS A WEEK WITH BARELY ANY BREAKS. • IN THIS BOOK, AMOS’S SLAVERY EXPERIENCE IS A BIT DIFFERENT THAN OTHER SLAVES.
PLOTLINE • THE STORY STARTS WITH AMOS AS A PRINCE IN HIS TRIBE IN AFRICA. WHEN HE WAS JUST A TEENAGER, A WAGON FULL OF MEN ENTERED THEIR TRIBE AND KILLED MANY, INCLUDING AMOS’S FATHER. AMOS WAS CAPTURED BUT NOT KILLED. • HE SPENT MOST OF HIS LIFE (AGE 15-82) WORKING AS A SLAVE ON A FARM. WHEN HE TURNED 82, HIS MASTER FELT PITY FOR HIM AND GRANTED HIM FREEDOM FOR HIS YEARS OF SLAVERY. • ONCE HE TURNED 82 HE WAS LONELY LIVING IN HIS HOME, SO HE WENT OFF TO MARRY. ON HIS WAY HE HAD SEEN A WOMEN WORKING AS A SLAVE WHO WAS DESPERATE TO LEAVE. HE WALKED OVER AND TALKED TO HER MASTER AND MADE A DEAL. IF AMOS PAID THE WOMEN’S MASTER A CERTAIN PRICE, HE WOULD LET AMOS MARRY HER. HER MASTER AGREED.
PLOTLINE • AMOS AND THE WOMAN WERE MARRIED FOR A GOOD 4 YEARS, THEN ONE DAY THE WOMEN DIED OF OLD AGE. AMOS STAYED ALONE FOR A WHILE AND WENT OFF TO MARRY AGAIN. THIS TIME, AMOS LOOKED IN THE SAME TOWN AND FOUND ANOTHER WOMEN WORKING. THEY MADE THE SAME DEAL AND THERE WERE MARRIED. BUT THE MAN WARNED AMOS, SHE WON’T LAST LONG. HE WAS RIGHT, THE WOMEN ONLY LASTED A COUPLE OF MONTHS AND DIED OF A SICKNESS. • HE WAS GETTING QUITE OLD AND SAD LIVING IN THE SAME TOWN. HE FOUND A NEW TOWN TO LIVE IN, THIS ONE WAS BIGGER AND HAD MORE HOUSES. AMOS SAW YET ANOTHER WOMAN AND BARGAINED FOR HER FREEDOM. SHE BECAME HIS THIRD WIFE.
PLOTLINE • AMOS AND HIS THIRD WIFE HAD A CHILD, HER NAME WAS CELYNDIA ALWAYS ENJOYED WORKING AROUND THE HOUSE AND LOVED TO MAKE SOUP. THEY ALL LOVED HAYBALE RIDES SO THEY TOOK CELYNDIA ON ONE WITH THEM. • THE STORY ENDED WHEN AMOS AND HIS WIFE TOOK A HIKE. AMOS COLLAPESED AND HIS WIFE CALLED CELYNDIA TO HELP HER TAKE AMOS HOME. WHILST AMOS WAS LAYING IN BED, HE WAS PRAYING TO GOD SAYING “YOU CAN TAKE ME NOW, I’M READY”. AMOS DIED LATER THAT EVENING. TRAGICALLY HIS WIFE ALSO DIED THAT EVENING.
MAJoR CHARACTERS • AMOS – HE IS THE MAIN CHARACTER BECAUSE THE STORY REVOLVED AROUND HIS LIFE. • VIOLET – VILOET IS A MAJOR CHARACTER BECAUSE SHE HAS A LOT IN COMMON WITH AMOS AS HIS WIFE.
Minor characters • WIFE-1 – WIFE-1 IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE SHE WAS AMOS’S FIRST WIFE THAT HE HAD FREED. • WIFE-2 – WIFE-2 IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE SHE WAS A SLAVE LIKE AMOS UNTIL AMOS FREED HER B MARRYING HER.
Written summary • THIS BOOK GIVES A FASCINATING VIEW INTO THE LIFE OF AN EXTRAORDINARY MAN. • AMOS WAS ABLE TO SAVE THREE WOMEN FROM SLAVERY. • NO MATTER WHAT STAGE YOU ARE IN YOUR LIVE, YOU ALWAYS FIND WAYS TO HELP OTHER PEOPLE.
