Migrant Education Goals: The goal of the Migrant Education Program is to ensure that all migrant students reach challenging academic standards and graduate with a high school diploma (or complete a GED) that prepares them for responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment.

  3. About the National Migrant Education Program (MEP): • Migrant Education is a National Program created in the 1960’s to fight Lyndon Johnson’s “war on poverty”. • MEP is a federally funded Title I Program. • Each state has its own unique program. • Funding is allocated according to how many students are identified in each state. Lyndon B. Johnson

Aboutthe Vermont Migrant Education Program • The VT Department of Education runs the program and provides “supplemental” educational services. • The Department of Education has contracted with UVM Extension to provide recruitment services. • MEP personnel, tutors and recruiters work with school systems and communities to identify eligible families.

How does a family qualify? • The VT MEP serves youths between ages 0 and 21, providing the youth does not have a H.S diploma. • Children qualify if their families have moved to a new town for a temporary job in agriculture. • Individuals qualify if they move for a temporary job in agriculture.
