  1. Unit 6: The Judges & Ruth Two contrasting books: One book (Judges) demonstrates faithlessness… --shows what happens in a world without God. The other book (Ruth) demonstrates faithfulness… --shows what happens when God is at the center of our lives.

  2. The Book of Judges The questions left hanging after the book of Joshuaare: “Will Israel possess the land?” “Would the Israelites remember their promise to God and obey the ban and clear the Canaanites from the land?”

  3. The Book of Judges Reading Judges, chapter 1… Things look promising. The tribes of Judah and Simeon are driving out the remaining Canaanities. But more than half of the tribes of Israel are NOT obeying God’s command! They are living with the Canaanites. Some are using the Canaanites as forced labor. Others are making treaties with them.

  4. The Book of Judges Read Judges 2:6 - 7, 10 – 23 Tension = Israel served the Lord but didn’t fully obey the Lord! The rise of the next generation = a people who didn’t know the Lord and who didn’t know what the Lord had done for Israel. Stop and reflect: Why did this happen?

Result = they did evil “evil” = worshiping false gods and idols (BAAL and ASHTORETH) and the Lord didn’t protect them anymore!

  6. Who the heck are Baal and the Ashtoreths?!? Judges 2:13 says the Israelites “served Baal and the Ashtoreths” Baal and the Ashtoreths were local gods. Both of these were fertility (fertility = the harvest and getting pregnant) gods. Each part of Canaan had its own version of one of these fertility gods. Baal was believed to have power over nature—especially the weather. Ashtoreth was a goddess believed to control one’s ability to have children and to be victorious in war.

  7. The people cried out for help…and the Lord raised up judges… Who were “the Judges” of Israel? Go back to Exodus 18… …why did Moses appoint judges? …what were the judges responsible for doing? The judges in our story come from this event but they are also a little different… …they were also people of action—military action …they gained their positions because of their wisdom AND their war strategies and bravery.

  8. The people were saved but not changed… How do we know this? When the judge died… …the evil of the people returned. The people weren’t just evil… …they were stubborn—(Reflect: WHY?) And so in chapter 2, we are told how the story ends…the Lord ends up using the remaining Canaanities to test Israel—to see if Israel with keep and walk in the way of the LORD.

  10. The Cycle or Pattern of Judges SIN ISRAEL WORSHIPED THE CANAANITES’ IDOLS & GODS. ∨ JUDGMENT GOD SENT RAIDERS WHO STOLE THE LAND AND ENSLAVED THE ISRAELITES. ∨ REPENTANCE ISRAEL TURNED BACK TO YHWH AND CRIED OUT FOR HELP. ∨ REDEMPTION GOD RAISED UP JUDGES TO SAVE THEM & GIVE THEM PEACE.

  11. The Main Enemies of Israel The Philistines: Great warriors (iron weapons) Coastal people Dagon = one of their gods The Moabites Children of Lot’s daughter Powerful invaders Chemosh = one of their gods The Ammonites Children of Lot’s daughter Molech = one of their gods

  12. The Main Enemies of Israel The Canaanites Occupied the land north of Philistia. Farmers but skilled warriors too (chariots). Baal and Ashtoreth = their gods. The Midianites Desert people—attacked swiftly (camels). Mined copper. Moses’ wife was a Midianite.

  13. The Twelve Judges of Israel Major Judges (these judges will be our focus!) Othniel, Ehud, Deborah, Gideon, Jephthah and Samson. Minor Judges (you don’t need to memorize these names!) Shamgar, Tola, Jair, Ibzan, Elon and Abdon

  16. HOMEWORK (Due Tuesday, January 27th) Read Judges, chapters 4 -5 and outline the story of Deborah: What happened to cause her to become a judge? Who and what did she deliver Israel from? How was Israel delivered? How many years did she lead Israel? 2. Blog your response to my question about Ehud and the murder of King Eglon. Be sure to interact with at least two other student responses by Monday night. 3. Learn the memory verse.
