  3. What isPlate Tectonics?

  4. In 1965, J Tuzo Wilson put together Wegner’s theory of continental drift and Hess’ theory about sea-floor spreading into one big theory- Plate Tectonics

  5. Plate Tectonicsis the theory that states that pieces of Earth’slithosphereare in constant, slow motion, driven byconvection currentsinthe mantle.

  6. Confused?

  7. I’ll explain.

  8. These pieces of the lithosphere are calledplates or tectonic plates.

  9. Theplates are always moving in slow motion.

  10. So what moves them?

  11. Scientists think that convection currents inside the mantle do!

  12. Plate Tectonicsis the theory that states that pieces of Earth’slithosphereare in constant, slow motion, driven byconvection currentsinthe mantle.

  13. As the plates move around they collide, pull apart and grind past each other!

  14. Plates collide atconvergent zones

  15. The Cascades were formed at aconvergent zone

  16. Many volcanic islands are formed atconvergent zones.

  17. So were the Himalayas!

  18. Do you see how?

  19. Plates move apart, or divide, atdivergent boundaries.

  20. The mid- ocean ridge is a divergent boundary.

  21. Plates slide past each other attransform boundaries.

  22. Crust is neither created or destroyed at transform boundaries.

  23. 3 boundaries are convergent, divergent and transform!
