  1. Problem Solving in a STEM School: Real Life! Presented by: Beth Peery Cherry Steffen

  2. Three Approaches to Teaching Mathematics:

  3. What is Problem Solving? • In your foldable, write your definition of Problem Solving….. • Fifty years of problem solving

  4. Problem Solving in STEM is….. The ability of students to ANALYZE, REASON and COMMUNICATE ideas effectively as they POSE, FORMULATE, SOLVE and INTERPRET solutions to mathematical problems in a variety of situations.

  5. Routine VS. Real Problems

  6. Sample Problems….Which are real and which are routine?

  7. Mathematical Practices for Eighth Grade: • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. • Reason abstractly and quantitatively. • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. • Model with mathematics. • Use appropriate tools strategically. • Attend to precision. • Look for and make use of structure • Look for and express regularity in related reasoning

  8. Ways to assist students in developing skills in problem solving…. • Humorous cards • Games • Hands on activities • Team work • Discussions • Sharing • Connections to content areas • Word Problems THIS TAKES TIME!

  9. Assessments for Teachers and Students….

  10. Scoring the problem solving…. 4 points: Completes the step consistently at an independent level. 3 points: Completes step mostly at an independent level. 2 points: Needs assistance with step 1 point: Does not attempt nor seek assistance with step.

  11. The answer is….. -12 What is the question? Think for 30 seconds…write for 3 minutes….share for 3 minutes

  12. Photography Problem Solving • Examples from fifth grade level

  13. Create your own word problems… • Using the content you are covering, create your own word problem in your foldable notebook.

  14. Practice Task for STEM: • How far can my airplane fly? • How might I change the speed of my airplane? • How will I create a graph to show the results of my team?

  15. Planning and Sharing Time!
