Fall Protection • Fall Arrest • Fall Guarding • Fall Restraint • Rescue
Fall Arrest • Fall arrest is the form of fall protection which involves the safe stopping of a person who is already falling • Vertical Fall
Fall Guarding • General protection that prevents persons from entering a fall hazard area e.g., guard rails
Fall Restraint • Fall restraint (personal protection which prevents persons who are in a fall hazard area from falling).
Fall Arrest • Netting • Personal Fall Arrest - PPE
ABCD of Fall Arrest • A = Anchor • B = Body Wear = Full body Harness • C = Connector • D = Deceleration Device = slows the arrest when falling. • E = Emergency Plan & Equipment
A = anchor • Must be secured to a fixed structure or structural adaptation. • May be lifeline secured to a building. • Certification & inspection.
Body Wear • A full Body Harness worn by the worker. • Not all are the same, what suits on may not suit another as with all PPE. • Correct adjustment required.
Connector • Lanyard • Fall arrest block • Must be energy absorbing capacity for fall arrest
Deceleration device • Huge forces generated in arresting a fall • Energy absorber - limits energy absorbed by the body to SURVIVABLE levels. • Limits forces on anchors such as Horizontal Life Lines which might cause failure of the anchorage • May not be required in fall restraint - depends on fall distance.
Safe Fall Distance • Deployment of the energy absorbers + • Length of lanyard + • Height of person + • safety factor
Training • Training on Equipment = Use & Care, inspection and hazards • Theory & Practical
Planning • Planning for work - Method Statements • Risk assessment • Planning for emergencies
Emergencies • Rescue Plan - worst case scenario • Included in all Method Statements for Work at Height. • Rescue from fall within 10 mins. • Seat in W position. • Rescue equipment available. • Rescue from MEWP - practise.
Recap • Fall Arrest • Fall Guarding • Fall Restraint • Rescue
