  3. WashingWashing is the first step that needs to be done while commencing the work of painting a house. Wash the walls with a hose and get rid of any stubborn dirt with a scrub brush using warm and soapy water. It can also be done using a power washer. When you are looking to paint a bathroom or kitchen, prepare a washing solution by mixing approximately three teaspoons of laundry detergent to one gallon of water and then use this solution to wash the walls. 4. ScrapeThe next step is scraping any cracked or flaking paint with a paint scraper. Small areas of defective paint can be removed using a wire brush and a wide-blade putty knife. Scrub under the laps of clapboard siding as well as on downspouts and gutters. For metal surfaces, use a wire brush attachment on an electric drill, it will remove dust and paint easily from metal surfaces. If you are looking for extensive paint removal then you will have to use a sharp pull scraper which has a replaceable blade capable of stripping old paint all the way down to bare wood with a single scrape. Other minor imperfections on the wall like plaster bumps can be smoothened away with sandpaper, this can be done by rubbing the surface with a piece of sandpaper stapled to a sanding block, or you can even use an electric sander. 5. CaulkNow we move on to the next step called caulking. Caulking is a process which people often tend to forget when they do interior painting projects. Caulk is a type of product or sealant (usually a blend of acrylic and silicone) used to seal seams and cracks that exist, where surfaces meet. Caulks come in different colors. The tools needed for caulking are - caulk gun, a putty knife, a razor knife, a tile-grout sponge and a bucket. Fill a bucket with warm water. Hold the caulk gun at a 45 degree angle and cut a small opening at the tip of crack and squeeze the handle so an even amount of caulk flows from the tube. Keep the caulk slightly higher than the top of the gap or crack. Once the caulking has been applied, smoothen it out either with a finger or wet rag. 6. PuttyPutty is a type of plastic material similar in texture to clay or dough used in domestic construction and repair as a sealant or filler. Painter's Putty is typically a linseed oil based product used for filling holes, minor cracks and defacements in wood only. Putty is used on fresh wall to balance level and smoothen the surface by filling blemishes, cracks, holes on masonry surface to give it a beautiful look and make it ready to paint.
