The Great Lakes Basin • 21% of the world’s fresh surface water: • 5,472 cubic miles (22,810 km3) • Surface area of the lakes is nearly the same size as the United Kingdom • 94,250 square miles (244,100 km2) • More than 98 per cent of Ontario residents — 11 million people — live within the Great Lakes Basin. Most live near the shores, in eight of Canada’s 20 largest cities, which include Toronto, Hamilton, Windsor and Sarnia. • The people of Ontario depend on the Great Lakes for their drinking water.
