Professionalism Some qualities of professionalism: • Reliable – as a team member, you will be counted on to get the job done. Respond and follow through! • Competent – as a team member, you will need to become an expert in your concept or menu. • Appearance – as a team member, be sure to go the extra mile in appearance. What are some ways you can dress professionally for competition? • Organization – your work area should be neat and tidy. Your PPT presentation should by simple and not cluttered.
Team work • A team that works well together understands the strengths and weaknesses of each team member. • One of the benefits of strong teamwork is that team leaders and members can divide up tasks so they are done by the most qualified people. • Example: costing, marketing tactics, photography
Team work • You can’t succeed without team work! • How many of you have worked in a group project? • Someone tell me the worst group project experience you’ve had? • Someone tell me the best group project experience you’ve had?
Presentation skills • Good presentation skills require organization and confidence. • You need to be able to deliver an effective and engaging message to a variety of audiences (judges and spectators). • These skills cover a variety of areas such as the structure of your message, the design of your slides, the tone of your voice and the body language you convey. Avoid…
Presentation skills • Show your passion and connect with your audience. • If you don’t believe in your concept and menu, neither will the judges. • Smile, speak clearly and make eye contact with your audience.
Now it’s your turn! • Using what you already know and just learned… • We need 3 volunteers to come up and sell us on your favorite holiday in 20 seconds. • The audience will vote for the best speaker!
Working under pressure • Don't panic, maintain self control and work as efficiently as possible • Pressure can cost you points! • Example: You have 15 seconds left to get your last dish onto the tray and you anticipate going over time. What do you do?
Working under pressure • Answer: Don’t freak out! Work quickly to get the product onto the plate. Don’t worry about making the plates look identical. You lose more points going over time than not having identical looking plates. What the heck is that? An alpaca: I got the last one.
Action plan! • This is YOUR competition and your opportunity. • Get into your group and plan how you are going to prepare! • When is your 1st team meeting? What are your school schedules like? • Team communication style: • How often will you meet? Where will you meet? Exchange contact info. • What are you good at? • Writing, math, photography, marketing, typing, knife cuts, time management?
