  3. Opening sentence M: Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God. C: He will come and save you. (Isa 35:4 NRSV)

  5. Opening Hymn We sing our opening hymn: O God, Thou faithful God v.1,2,4 LHS 357 CAL 203 Johann Heermann 1585-1647 Tr Catherine Winkworth (1858) and John and Claire Kleinig (1999)

  6. Opening Hymn 1. O God, our faithful God, a fountain always flowing, the source of all that is, all perfect gifts bestowing: keep me both safe and well, and may I have within a conscience free from guilt, a soul unhurt by sin.

  7. Opening Hymn 2. Lord, give me strength to work with you in my location, to do what you command each day in my vocation. If, as I do my work, you call on me to speak, fill all my words with grace and power to help the weak.

  13. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: Friends in Christ: Let us confess our sins to God our Father and ask him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

  14. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION C: We confess that we are born in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have failed to do.

  15. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION C: We have not loved you with our whole heart, and we have not loved our neighbour as ourselves. We deserve your eternal punishment. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

  16. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION C: Forgive us, renew us, and lead us,so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

  20. PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray for persistence in prayer. C: Generous God, like a loving parent you always welcome us when we come to you.Encourage us to keep on approaching you for whatever we need, knowing that you supply what is best for us.

  21. PRAYER OF THE DAY We ask this through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

  22. FIRST READING Proverbs 22:1,2,8,9,22,23CEV Justice and generosity better than riches R: The first Reading for the 15th Sunday after Pentecost is written in Chapter 22 of Proverbs, beginning at Verse 1.

  23. Proverbs 22:1,2,8,9,22,23 A good reputation and respect are worth much more than silver and gold. 2The rich and the poor are all created by the LORD. 8Troublemakers get in trouble, and their terrible anger will get them nowhere. 9The LORD blesses everyone who freely gives food to the poor.

  24. Proverbs 22:1,2,8,9,22,23 22Don't take advantage of the poor or cheat them in court. 23The LORD is their defender, and what you do to them, he will do to you. This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

  25. Psalm 125CEV R: The Psalm is Psalm 125. 1Everyone who trusts the LORD is like Mount Zionthat cannot be shaken and will stand forever.   C: 2Just as Jerusalem is protected by mountains on every side, the LORD protects his people by holding them in his arms now and forever.

  26. Psalm 125CEV R: 3He won't let the wicked rule his people or lead them to do wrong.   C: 4Let's ask the LORD to be kind to everyone who is good and completely obeys him.

  27. Psalm 125CEV R: 5When the LORD punishes the wicked, he will punish everyone else who lives a crooked life. Pray for peace in Israel! C: Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

  28. Second reading James 2:1-17 CEV Faith shown in love R: The Second Reading is written in Chapter 2 of James, beginning at Verse 1.

  29. James 2:1-17 My friends, if you have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, you won't treat some people better than others. 2Suppose a rich person wearing fancy clothes and a gold ring comes to one of your meetings. And suppose a poor person dressed in worn-out clothes also comes.

  30. James 2:1-17 3You must not give the best seat to the one in fancy clothes and tell the one who is poor to stand at the side or sit on the floor. 4That is the same as saying that some people are better than others, and you would be acting like a crooked judge.

  31. James 2:1-17 5My dear friends, pay attention. God has given a lot of faith to the poor people in this world. He has also promised them a share in his kingdom that he will give to everyone who loves him. 6You mistreat the poor. But isn't it the rich who boss you around and drag you off to court? 7Aren't they the ones who make fun of your Lord?

  32. James 2:1-17 8You will do all right, if you obey the most important law in the Scriptures. It is the law that commands us to love others as much as we love ourselves. But if you treat some people better than others, you have done wrong, and the Scriptures teach that you have sinned. 

  33. James 2:1-17 10If you obey every law except one, you are still guilty of breaking them all. 11The same God who told us to be faithful in marriage also told us not to murder. So even if you are faithful in marriage, but murder someone, you still have broken God's Law.

  34. James 2:1-17 12Speak and act like people who will be judged by the law that sets us free. 13Do this, because on the day of judgment there will be no pity for those who have not had pity on others. But even in judgment, God is merciful!

  35. James 2:1-17 14My friends, what good is it to say you have faith, when you don't do anything to show that you really do have faith? Can that kind of faith save you? 15If you know someone who doesn't have any clothes or food, 16you shouldn't just say, "I hope all goes well for you. I hope you will be warm and have plenty to eat.”

  36. James 2:1-17 What good is it to say this, unless you do something to help? 17Faith that doesn't lead us to do good deeds is all alone and dead!  This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

  37. gospel Mark 7:24-37 CEV A woman's faith; Jesus heals a deaf mute M: The Holy Gospel is written in Chapter 7 of the Gospel according to St Mark, beginning at 24. C: Glory to you, O Lord .

  38. Mark 7:24-37 M: 24Jesus left and went to the region near the city of Tyre, where he stayed in someone's home. He did not want people to know he was there, but they found out anyway.

  39. Mark 7:24-37 25A woman whose daughter had an evil spirit in her heard where Jesus was. And right away she came and knelt down at his feet. 26The woman was Greek and had been born in the part of Syria known as Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to force the demon out of her daughter.

  40. Mark 7:24-37 27But Jesus said, "The children must first be fed! It isn't right to take away their food and feed it to dogs." 28The woman replied, "Lord, even dogs eat the crumbs that children drop from the table.”

  41. Mark 7:24-37 29Jesus answered, "That's true! You may go now. The demon has left your daughter." 30When the woman got back home, she found her child lying on the bed. The demon had gone.

  42. Mark 7:24-37 31Jesus left the region around Tyre and went by way of Sidon toward Lake Galilee. He went through the land near the ten cities known as Decapolis. 32Some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk. They begged Jesus just to touch him. 

  43. Mark 7:24-37 33After Jesus had taken him aside from the crowd, he stuck his fingers in the man's ears. Then he spit and put it on the man's tongue. 34Jesus looked up toward heaven, and with a groan he said, "Effatha!" which means "Open up!" 35At once the man could hear, and he had no more trouble talking clearly.

  44. Mark 7:24-37 36Jesus told the people not to say anything about what he had done. But the more he told them, the more they talked about it. 37They were completely amazed and said, "Everything he does is good! He even heals people who cannot hear or talk."  This is the Gospel of the Lord . C:Praise to you, O Christ.

  45. M: Thank you, Lord Jesus, for your great power and compassion in healing people. Help us to trust in you for all our needs. C: Amen.

  46. APOSTLE’S CREED C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

  47. APOSTLE’S CREED And in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead.
