Historical Context • Who are the important people? • What culture is presupposed? • What is honor and shame? • What values are embodied in the text? • What are the chief characteristics of the people who are described?
Literary context • How does the passage contribute to the “flow” of the text? • By flow, we mean how does the text relate to what goes before and after? • How does what goes before set the stage for the text? • How does the text set the stage for what comes after?
