Speciation Speciation requires geographic isolation. Otherwise, genes keep mixing and differences don’t get bigger. Geographic isolation: Different continents Rivers, canyons, or mountains inbetween Significantly different environments
Speciation vs. Genetic Drift Geographic isolation Two species are different when: They cannot mate or Their offspring are strongly selected against, limiting the number of hybrids.
Classification Scientists used to categorize and name species on the basis of visible similarities and differences. Now they also include DNA mapping and other less obvious features. Linnaeus is the scientist who created the naming system. Each species gets two Latin names. Ex: Homo sapien Canis lupus
