The NALIS Project Author: DinchoKrastev Funded by: America for Bulgaria Foundation Period: June 2009 - June 2014 Founders: - Central Library of BAS (2 mil items), - Sofia University (2 mil items), - American University in Bulgaria (102 447 items) The total number of items kept in academic libraries in Bulgaria is ca. 15 mil.
The NALIS Project Goals Union catalogue of the universities and research libraries in Bulgaria – done and being enlarged Unification of the level of automation of the academic libraries – done for the associate members Increasing the level of quality – ongoing
The NALIS Project Stages Online union catalogue of the founding libraries (completed Sept 2010) Enlarging the catalogue with retroconverted records from the founding libraries (ongoing) Enlarging of the catalogue with bib records of the founding libraries (ongoing)
The NALIS Project Achievements 1 mil records in the NALIS Union Catalogue (1/5 of the national holdings in terms of library items): - user friendly and easy to operate with bilingual interface (BG, ENG) giving free and quick access to bib information (the patron may choose where to read) and the resources themselves proposing the opportunity to refine search results (by topic, creator or date) 300 000 retroconverted records
The NALIS Project Achievements 2 digital collections: - ca. 750 titles of 19th-century Bulgarian books and periodicals (more than 1000 digital objects); - ca 400 letters (Salvini Archive) The digital collections can be easily integrated to WDL MARC 21 Bibliographic translated in 2011 and uploaded online 3 library dictionaries published on the NALIS website 11 associate members

HOW TO INTERPRET THE FIGURES everything is done from scratch: the largest union catalogue prior NALIS UC had 310 000 bib records and was not easily accessible - by a handful of people (the NALIS team was 3 people in 2009-2010 and 4 people in 2011) Bulgaria is a small country the founding libraries increased their electronic bib records (SU with over 200 000, CL-BAS – ca 60 000)
