Switch Asia Programme • Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) themed • 30 million Euros (2012 call) for Asian countries • Project based, less focused on research • Deadline 23rd March (last Friday!) • Principle requirements: EU partner, non-profit making • Primarily focusing on: • Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) • Manufacturing sector

  4. 1. Switch Asia (cont.) Expected results: 1) Reduce the environmental and social cost of production and consumption 2) Move SCP practices from demonstration to replication 3) Norm shift in policy-making towards sustainability http://ec.europa.eu/europeaid/where/asia/regional-cooperation/environment/switch_en.htm

  8. 3. Challenges • Finding appropriate partners • Lead applicant (in particular) • EU Partner (and willing to work in Asia) • Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs) • Stiff competition so needs to be good • Heavy time input • Meeting partners • Building contacts and relationships • Writing proposal (potentially 2 stages)

  9. 4. Lessons • Start the process early! • Knowing the call and specific requirements • Takes time and effort • Not research - UTM ‘unlikely’ lead applicant • Many proposals rejected due to incorrect administration details • Need reliable and wide contacts • Partners are critical • Clear ‘ownership’ of proposal • More detail the better…but resource intensive!

  10. 5. Key Messages • Effort required but rewards are high • Attention to detail goes a long way • Good practice for academics writing proposals • Excellent contact building exercise Rory Padfield rory@ic.utm.my, rorypadfield@gmail.com Mobile: 013-6632037
