  1. CLM-Community Barbara Früh Deutscher Wetterdienst COSMO SMC meeting January 24, 2018 Offenbach, Germany

  2. COSMO – COSMO-CLM reunification • COSMO-CLM SCA requires help from some experts in checking the namelists and looking into the results. Reunification starts with the release of COSMO5.5 • Reunification to be realized with COSMO6intended to be finished in September 2018. • COPAT like evaluation to be performed intended to receive a recommended model version in September 2019 • COSMO6.0-CLM will be the version to which ICON-LAM climatological evaluation run will be compared intended to be finished in September 2020

  3. COSMO – COSMO-CLM reunification Current status • CLM-Community SCA for COMSO-CLM: Burkhardt Rockel • All CLM-Community change will beimplemtend in COSMO5.4_urb (Feb. 2018) • First COSMO-CLM version COSMO5.4_urb_clm1 finishedby ICCARUS • Next steps: implementing OASIS-Interface (Jenny Bruch alreadystarted) • Return to Uli S.

  4. ICON-CLAM development • CLM – Community wants to adapt ICON-LAM for regional climate simulations • (potential) successor of COSMO-CLM in the future • project group ICON, ProWasproject (Jul 2017 – Jun 2019) @ DWD • important steps: • get model running with netCDf I/O for some months/years • make necessary adaptions for climate simulations (soil, vegetation, SSTs, model top, ....) • perform 30 year simulation with ERA-Interim boundary conditions • find suitable setup for climate simulations • perform reference simulation for comparison with COSMO-CLM 6.?

  5. ICON-CLAM source code management • First suggestion • after discussingwithDetlev M., Florian P., Christian S., Barbara F. • tobepresented in the CLM Working Group meetings @ ICCARUS • CLM–Community gets own repository (icon-clam (?)); not at the same level as icon-nwp, icon-aes, ... • icon-clam branches of the latest released version of icon-nwp • developer from CLM–Community have to consolidate the code • CLM-Community SCA merges the code back to the development branch for the next release • code is handed over to COSMO (COSMO administrates ICON-LAM code) and merged with COSMO branch • code is merged back to icon-nwp repository by COSMO SCA

  6. Simulation framework • domains • grid spacing • simulation period • driving GCMs and scenarios • archive • downscaling procedures Slide: courtesy of Silje Lund Sørland

  7. Simulation framework - domains • follow CORDEX standard domains • CORE set of domains includes (in priority order): • Africa • South Asia • Central America • Southeast Asia • South America • Middle East – North Africa • The priority order is based on: • Special attention to a continent that is especially vulnerable to climate change • High-populated regions, and especially those that may have relatively large vulnerability to climate change and lack of local infrastructure • East Asia • Arctic • Europe • North America • Australia • Central Asia Slide: courtesyofSilje Lund Sørland

  8. Simulation framework • Grid spacing: Target: 12.5 – 25 km, but flexible • Simulation period: • ERA-Interim simulation for each domain from 1979-2015 • minimum simulation period 1970-2100 (target 1950) • Driving GCMs and scenarios • CMIP5 GCMs, add CMIP6 eventually. • CORDEX recommendation for each domain for GCMs that perform well • downscale minimum 3 GCMs (ideally 5-6) for 2 scenarios (RCP8.5 and RCP2.6) • Archive:Follow the standard CORDEX protocol Slide: courtesyofSilje Lund Sørland

  9. CLM-Community CORDEX CORE Version: Jan. 11, 2018

  10. CORDEX-CORE/CLM-Community Timeline develop collaboration with institutes having experience with the different domains Papers accepted in time to be included in the AR6 Analyzing the results/writing papers Time to perform the CORE-simulations 2017 2018 2020 2021 2019 ETH: developing COMSO-gpuversion to be used for the CORE simulations WG contributions to AR6 finalized in 2021 and AR6 SYR in I-II/ 2022. Slide: courtesyofSilje Lund Sørland

  11. CORDEX-CORE/CLM-Community Current status • Start with African domain • Telephone conference on Feb 07, 2018 ETHZ, KU Leuven, KIT, _JRC • discussion points: • how to approach the goal of using a common model setup for the different domains: simulations at ETH use gpu-version, other groups use another model version, • coordination of CORDEX-CORE simulation over Africa • How to make use of existing simulations with the CCLM model over Africa • Continue with South Asia (ETHZ, GUF) Slide: courtesyofSilje Lund Sørland
