Muon Spins and Unusual Superconductivity in PrOs4Sb12Douglas E. MacLaughlin, University of California-Riverside, DMR 0801407 Our research uses the muon spin relaxation technique: a local mag-netic probe to study exotic mate-rials. Much like NMR, but implanted muons are the resonant spins. We are studying unusual broken time reversal symmetry (BTRS) in the unconventional supercon-ductor PrOs4Sb12. Muons “see” a magnetic field associated with BTRS. Unusual: means a movie run backwards does not look like the real thing! Results: BTRS in alloys contain-ing Ru or La becomes continu-ously weaker. But Os kills BTRS at ~60% substitution, whereas all La-doped alloys retain BTRS to some extent.
Muon Spins and Unusual Superconductivity in PrOs4Sb12Douglas E. MacLaughlin, University of California-Riverside, DMR 0801407 Muon spin rotation experiments are car-ried out with small collaborations (~10 participants) at meson factories with high-intensity beams of muons, such as TRIUMF (Vancouver, Canada) (upper photo) and the Paul Sherrer Institute (Switzerland) (lower photo). Students and postdocs acquire experience at international facilities, learning a variety of experimental techniques. The research involves collaboration with faculty at the California State Uni-versity (CSU). Students at CSU Los Angeles have been co-authors of sev-eral publications. Research experience in our group pre-pares students for a wide range of fu-ture careers in academia, industry, or government.
