Implementing CPED Working Principle #4 • Using multiple frames to develop meaningful solutions • to problems of practice – • During the introductory leadership course in the doctoral • program of study students are introduced to Bolman • & Deal’s four frame model as a lens to use in examining • problems of practice from multiple vantage points. • Providing field-based opportunities to analyze problems of practice – • NIU’s extended, integrated, embedded doctoral internship addresses the goal of bridging the gap between classroom theory and authentic leadership practice. This internship model serves multiple purposes i.e., developing the habits of heart, hand, and mind. (Shulman, 2005, p. 56). The classroom and field experiences combine to provide the student with opportunities to: observe and analyze; read and interpret; question and answer; conjecture and refute, propose and respond, define problems and formulate hypotheses; and engage in both individual invention and collaborative problem-solving and deliberation. Also, by actively engaging the intern in the design and implementation of a solution to an authentic problem of practice within their school district, the internship experience includes Professor Shulman’s “public performance” element (Shulman, 2005, p.57). The qualities of uncertainty, visibility, and accountability permeate the internship.
