Statement of Environmental Problem The watershed of Wollaston Beach in Quincy, MA is very detrimental to the surrounding waters of Quincy Bay. All of the run off from the streets going back almost 6 miles ends up in the ocean water. This has created a hazardous aquatic ecosystem over the years despite recent efforts to clean up the area. Science - Approximately 1,000 square acres surrounding Wollaston Beach collect then pour into the bay at 8 discharge areas spanning the area of the beach. This means that all of the materials that go down the street drains goes into the waters which equals pollution.
Additional Problems Social Science - This is a problem that affects the environment as well as the human population. For example when bacteria levels area high due to leaky sewage pipes or from pet waste this contaminates the water and poisons the fish or animals that may use the area as a food source and habitat. Stakeholders - We are all stakeholders either as inhabitants who are living in a polluted area or as taxpayers that must pay for its upkeep.
Potential Solutions Science - We must stop the amount of pollution entering the water. Either from catch basins and sewer drains or from pet waste or from leaking, ageing sewer pipes. Social Science - In September 2009 the Quincy government partnered up with the Dept. of Conservation, FWB and the Office of Costal Zone Management in a state wide initiative to clean up Massachusetts coast lines. All of the debris was collected and them documented to help learn more about what is going into the water and why. The Mayor Of Quincy has also promised to take a rigorous approach to street cleaning and catch basin cleaning. Civic Engagement - Friends Of Wollaston Beach is and organization of members of the community that are dedicated to the public use and preservation of Wollaston beach. Their organization has partnered up with many different organizations to clean up and revitalize the area from stenciling "No Dumping" on sewer drains to beautifying the boardwalk. Without this group the ecosystem of the Wollaston beach area would undoubtedly be in worst shape.
Monitoring Plans The City of Quincy must conduct an assessment of the entire sewage system and bump up testing of the water at drainage points and in catch basins an neighborhoods. They must also issue steeper penalties for people caught dumping illegally and train officers in the area to look out for anything unusual in the waters.
