Learning Sciences (LS) is an interdisciplinary field that studies how human learn, scientifically. It focuses a variety of (learning) settings, including not only the more formal learning of school classrooms but also the informal learning that takes place at home, on the job and among peers. The goal of LS is to better understand the cognition and social processes that result in the most effective learning, to use this knowledge to redesign the classrooms and other learning environments –so that human learn more deeply and meaningfully (Sawyer, 2006) about the time to shift
The philosophy of learning is to foster a desired change in the learner
The BIG three: Science of …
Who is the KEY + PLAYER?
Learning Sciences@UNIMASScaffolding for Meaningful Learning The Learning Sciences program in UNIMAS is interdisciplinary in nature, combining advanced knowledge and skills in the areas of cognitive sciences, instructional technology and learning sciences research in its curriculum framework. The field of Learning Sciences is made up of a community devoted to the study of how people learn and use findings from this study to design instructional practices and learning environments that can lead to effective learning. The Learning Sciences group is committed towards promoting instructional practices grounded on the scientific understanding of how humans learn. Research interest of the group primarily centers on understanding the complexities of human learning – how it takes place in a variety of formal and informal real life settings, and how it can be improved and better scaffolded. Research strands of the group include investigation of factors elemental to the design of effective learning environments, the potentials of emerging technologies to scaffold for meaningful learning, and the issues, problems or challenges to learning from a multitude of perspectives, such as cognitive science, socio-cultural studies, and educational psychology. The Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) is the first institution in Malaysia that offers a graduate programme in Learning Sciences.
