How did Carolina begin? • The King owed people money • He paid eight people by giving them a bunch of land called Carolina and calling them the Lord Proprietors • These Proprietors ruled the colony while paying money to the King
How would it work? • John Locke wrote the Fundamental Constitutions of Carolina • Based on religious tolerance to attract people (Not like New England) • Social class system based on large land holders, but never carried out • Did not emphasize equality
