  6. How did Carolina begin? • The King owed people money • He paid eight people by giving them a bunch of land called Carolina and calling them the Lord Proprietors • These Proprietors ruled the colony while paying money to the King

  8. How would it work? • John Locke wrote the Fundamental Constitutions of Carolina • Based on religious tolerance to attract people (Not like New England) • Social class system based on large land holders, but never carried out • Did not emphasize equality

  10. What about the money? • The Headright system was put in place • This system led to the plantation system (Like all southern colonies) • Cash crops brought lots of money

  11. Guided Practice • We are going to go through the graphic organizers about the Lord Proprietors together. You need to make sure that you are following along.

  12. Independent Practice • You are going to read the article on the Lord Proprietors and then you will answer the higher order thinking questions on your own. Make sure you are working silently and independently.
