What Lung Cancer is? • Rapid cell growth of the lung cells - epithelial cells • Lung cancer is the leading cause in death for both men and women. • And can be caused by secondhand smoking.
Causes, inherited, environmental causes, both? • Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer. another leading cause of lung cancer is pollution. Pollution causes 1% of lung cancer related deaths .It is responsible for about 90% of lung cancer cases. It can not be inherited from your parents it can only be caught from the environment.
What kind effects do lung cancer have on the body? - Lung cancer can have some side effects of a persistent cough; blunt, aching and constant pain in the chest. - Lung cancer can also have a shortness of breath or panting; a scratchy voice, and it may also yield a blood-producing cough.
What are the different stages of lung cancer? • stage 0 - abnormal lump found in the air lining of the lung, may become cancerous if it starts to spread. • stage 1 a- -Tumor found only the lung. -Is no larger than 3 cm in length • stage 1 b- one or more of the following has occured -tumor found in lung -but is larger than 3 cm, but no larger than 5cm. -tumor has spread to the bronchus or almost to it - spread to the innermost layer of the lung. -lung has collapsed or developed pneumonitis in area where trachea joins bronchus.
stages of lung cancer continued • stage 2 A- -cancer has spread to lymph nodes - one or more is true • The tumor is not larger than 5cm • Cancer has spread to the mainbronchus and is at least 2 centimeters below where thetrachea joins the bronchus. • Cancer has spread to the innermost layer of themembrane that covers thelung. • Part of the lung has collapsed or developedpneumonia (inflammation of the lung) in the area where the trachea joins the bronchus. • stage 2 B- - cancer has not spread to lymph nodes yet. - tumor is 5 cm to 7 cm large - rest is the same as stage 2 a above. (with exception of infected lymph nodes and size)
stages of lung cancer continued again... ITS SHORTENED • stage 3 a/b - (B is not on here or we would be here forever) - tumor any size(A1,A2,A3), more than one tumor in lung(s) (A1,A2,A3), infected most of upper torso area lymph nodes infected (A1,A2,A3) • stage 4 a- (again b not covered or we would be here forever) - tumor in one or both lungs - cancer found in fluid around heart and/or lungs - cancer spread to other parts of body (brain, heart, liver, and more).
What are the possible outcomes of each stage? • possible outcome (stage 0) - abnormal lump becomes cancerous once it starts to spread. • possible outcome (stage 1a/b) - death no likely if treated. • possible outcome (stage 2 a/b) - death possible • possible outcome (stage 3 a/b) - death more likely to happen • possible outcome (stage 4) - death going to happen unless treatment is given you will die from it.
how is this cancer detected? Some early warning signs are • A cough that does not go away • Shortness of breath with activity • Pain or aching in shoulder, back, chest, or arm • Repeated infections, such as bronchitis and pneumonia
what are the possible treatments? • Possible treatments of lung cancer vary upon what stage the lung cancer is at. • If lung cancer is at stage 1 or 2, can usually be treated through surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy. • For stage 3 lung cancer, can be treated with radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or surgery. • These are all really good ways to treat lung cancer.
Is there a cure? No there is no cure. Only treatment such as radiation therapy, and surgery to remove the tumor.
Is there a way to prevent lung cancer? • The key thing to do is NOT SMOKE • Even 2nd hand smoking can be harmful to your body • Another way you can prevent lung cancer is to lower the level of radon in your surrounding area • Many workplace can ban smoking so that there will not be any 2nd hand smoking for the people who try and avoid it.
Additional information • Most cancers start in the lung, it is caused from smoking or can be caught from second hand smoking. • Most patients that go through chemotherapy and then later on radiation therapy have a better chance to live than others who have not been treated. • Most men and women who have lung cancer have only a few years, which usually depends on what stage they have been diagnosed with.
