  1. ELM/EPT 101 CSU System’s Early Assessment Program

  2. How Prepared For College Success Are Students? Out of the 3,878 first time freshman entering CSUF during fall of 2010: 25% had to take at least one remediation class in Math (35% statewide) And 49% had to take at least one remediation class in English (49% statewide)

  3. Why? • Students who complete math and English proficiency requirements before arriving at CSU are 33% more likely to graduate than those who do not.

  4. ELA Note: For summer 2012, students scoring 138-146 will need to remediate in the fall term, possibly with a “stretch course.” Starting summer 2013, students scoring below 147 will require ESP. One Page Summary

  5. The Early Assessment Program EAP is a free voluntary test administered in the11th grade that can help students avoid the CSU placement test requirement and potentially avoid remediation classes.

  6. The Early Assessment Program EAP is a free test given with the Math and English California Standards Test (CST) your junior year.

What Do the Test Results Mean?Visit www.collegeEAP.org • Ready for CSU College-Level English and/or Math Courses • You’ve earned an exemption from the CSU Placement Test Requirement! • Enroll in college level classes. • Not Yet Demonstrating Readiness for CSU College-Level English and/or Math Courses • You are required to take the CSU Placement Test. It is strongly recommended you take a senior year math class. • Conditional Math Status: • CONDITIONAL DOES NOT MEAN EXEMPT! • A conditional status requires a student to complete a senior year of math with a “C” or better in order to earn and exemption from Placement Tests • Anticipated for 2013! English Conditional Status! (Currently being piloted in LBUSD. Exemption would be earned through ERWC course as senior year experience.)

What is a Senior Year Experience?for conditional students Math Only Complete one of the following options: • Complete a one year math class with a prerequisite of Algebra II or higher, senior year, with a “C” or better both semesters (C- doesn’t qualify for exemption) • (e.g. Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry, Advanced Algebra/Trig, etc.) • Standardized Test (SAT, ACT, AP) exemption • Complete a semester of a Community College Math course during your 12th grade with a “C” or better • Register for (ELM) Placement Test

EPT/ELM Registration • New ELM/EPT registration will launch Jan 1st. • www.fullerton.edu/testing or www.ets.org/csu • This system will identify students who have already received an exemption through either EAP or SAT and prevent them from registering. • ONLY if released EAP information to CSU and/or CSU/CCC • Students will still need to check and report their ACT scores • Test Dates (http://www.ets.org/csu/about) • CSUF: CSULB: • Feb 11th (1/27)Feb 11th (1/27) • March 17th (3/2) March 17th (3/2) • April 21st (4/6) April 7th (3/23) • May 5th (4/20)May 5th (4/20) • For test taken 5/5/12, students will receive scores late in week of 5/28/12 • In those instances where EPT/ELM scores are not available because the test has not been taken or the scores have not yet been reported, comparable scores from the SAT/ACT will be used. Students may identify their Early Start intentions or may elect to wait until EPT/ELM scores are received. CSU highly recommends taking the April test to ensure appropriate placement in Early Start Program.

EPT • Essay (45 minutes) • Students are asked to analyze and explain the ideas presented in the passage, and then take a position that they support by providing reasons and examples from their own experience, observations, or reading. • Reading Skills multiple-choice questions (30 minutes) • Part A: Reading Comprehension • Part B: Vocabulary in Context • Part C: Logical Relationships • Composing Skills multiple-choice questions (30 minutes) • Part A: Construction Shift • Part B: Sentence Correction • Part C: Missing Sentence • Part D: Supporting Sentence

  16. ELM • Major content areas: • Numbers and Data • Algebra • Geometry • Emphasis on quantitative reasoning and problem solving • No calculators • Provides major geometric formulae • Some campuses allow retake of ELM if score is below 50 More information at http://www.ets.org/csu/about

Remediation Options • Students can begin remediation through various options: • Destination campus • Service campus • Remediation at community college • Remediation through other programs (e.g., Summer Bridge) • CSU Chancellor’s Office will launch a website so students can see all course options at all CSUs. (Currently in development)

  18. Deadlines

  19. Students are encouraged to: • Check their Student Portal often! • Ensure that SAT/ACT/EAP and transcripts are submitted by required deadline. • Register for the ELM/EPT (if necessary) by the April date. • Accept admission decision and pay deposit (don’t wait until the last moment, hoping for financial aid to cover the fee). Contact the financial aid office if there is a financial hardship. • Attend the new student orientation. • Check if ESP is required on the Smart Page and register for the program in time. Complete ESP requirement. *Failure to complete these tasks may cause acceptance to be rescinded.
