INTRODUCTION • In India nearly 30% of men and 5% of women are regular consumers of alcohol. • India is one of the largest producers of alcohol in the world contributing to 65% of production and nearly 7% of its import. • The average age of drinking has reduced from 28 years in 1980 to 17 years in 2007. (Gururaj, 2011)
IMPACT ON MARGINALISED COMMUNITIES Alcohol brewing among the marginalized communities further aggravates the poverty at home (WHO, 2004). Study population: Arundathiyar is a marginalized community in Tamil Nadu known as ‘dalit among dalits” who does scavenging work, agriculture labour and other menial work.
STUDY POPULATION SAMPLING Total sample enumeration of Arundathiyar families in 21 villages. TOOLS USED • Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT, WHO, 2001). • Family schedule. (Indian Council of Medical Research, 1984).

ALCOHOL CONSUMPTIONRisk of alcohol related harm was reported by 8% of substance users • Risk of consumption was same among all the age group • More men (9.6%)were at high risk of substance use
ALCOHOL DEPENDENCY 15 % reported alcohol dependency Dependency was higher among • Persons living alone (26.1% ) • Higher age group(37 to 54 yrs 17.4% , 55 to 72yrs 16%,) • Males-16.4%
ALCOHOL RELATED PROBLEMS11% of alcohol users were harmful to high risk users • 44% of harmful users were in the age group 19-36yrs • 51% of high risk users were in the age group 37-54. • 94.7% high risk users were married. • 95% of high risk users were Males.
