Rivers • All water flows downhill due to gravity. • Rives flow from the head (source) to the mouth • Deltas form at the mouth of a river • Flood plains develop along a river • Flood plains and deltas are nutrient rich • Every river system has a drainage basin • Each drainage basin is separated by a watershed which is a higher elevation divide between two basins • In a certain area all the lakes, rivers, stream, and creeks will flow in the same general direction.
Young Rivers • Water is moving the fastest cutting the valley towards the base line (lowest point a river/stream can cut) • Young Rivers… • are turbulent • have narrow channels • have steep incline • have limited flood plains
Medium Age Rivers • Medium Age Rivers… • start to meander • are developing flood plains • become less turbulent • Start widening • Meanders have erosion on the outside and deposition on the inside to create the curved appearance
Old Rivers • Old rivers …. • have developed meanders • are less turbulent • have wide channels • have Gentle slope • have large deltas with braided channels • have large flood plains
