Action Verbs • Action verbs express an action. • For example: • Suzy skated her best. • Billy watched in awe. • We were cheering. Mr. Mehrotra ENG 2P0
Linking Verbs • Linking verbs describe a state of being. • They link the subject to a word that describes or renames the subject. • The most common linking verb is “be”. • For example: • Billy is the drummer. • My old car was rusty. • Our friend has been promoted. Mr. Mehrotra ENG 2P0
Intransitive • Expresses action, but the action is not done to any thing in particular. • There is no answer to the “what”. • For example: • Money talks. • Sunflowers grow very tall. • They departed late. • Sit down! Mr. Mehrotra ENG 2P0

Active Voice • Subject is doing the action of the verb. • For example: • The dog chases the cat. • Billy broke Suzy’s home run record. Mr. Mehrotra ENG 2P0
Passive Voice • Subject is receiving the action of the verb. • For example: • The cat is chased by the dog. • Billy’s home run record was broken by Suzy. Mr. Mehrotra ENG 2P0

Present Tense • The present tense of a verb tells what is happening now. • For example: • I live in Caledon. Mr. Mehrotra ENG 2P0
Past Tense • The past tense tells about something that happened in the past. • For example: • I lived in Caledon. Mr. Mehrotra ENG 2P0
Future Tense • The future tense tells about something that will happen in the future. • For example: • I will be living in Caledon when the move is finished. Mr. Mehrotra ENG 2P0
Present Participle • The present participle is formed by adding “–ing” to the present tense of the verb, and then using a form of the helping verb “be” with the present tense. • For example: • I am living in Caledon right now. • My friend is starting a new job today. Mr. Mehrotra ENG 2P0
Past Participle • The past participle is formed by adding “–ed” to the present tense of a verb to make it past tense, and then a form of the helping verb “have” with the past participle. • For example: • I have resided in Caledon for two years. Mr. Mehrotra ENG 2P0
