About this guide… • This study guide was developed with the help of all of the 6th graders. • Students should be able to answer each of these questions for the test. • These questions will not be exactly like those on the test; however, if the student has studied adequately using this guide, he or she should still perform successfully.

  3. Round 1 • What is a sentence? • What is a fragment? • What is the difference between a sentence and a fragment?

  4. Round 2 • 4. What are the types of sentences? • 5. What are the differences between a/an _______ sentence and _________ sentence? • 6. Name the eight linking/helping/state of being verbs.

  5. Round 3 • 7. What is a complete subject and what is a complete predicate? • 8. How would you tell someone how to find the complete predicate? • 9. Find the verb(s) in the sentence below and label it LV/AV/HV. (Hint: When the sentence ends with a question mark, the first word will likely be a helping verb. Look for the action verb to go with it.) • Are you going to the big game?

  6. Round 4 • 10. What are the four steps to diagraming a sentence? (0, 1, 2, 3) • 11. What’s the difference between a simple subject and a complete subject. • 12. Put parenthesis around prepositional phrases and label all of the subjects and verbs in the following sentence: • After school my dog and cat will be taken to the veterinarian’s office for an exam.

  7. Round 5 • Write a verb phrase. (What is one?) • Name the three ways when a verb will come before the subject in a sentence(Hint: When it is inverted). • Write an inverted sentence.
