Raising Arthritis Awareness • Information dissemination is the cornerstone to: • Raising awareness • Partnership building • Expanding program reach • Influencing policy efforts • Critical need to communicate the burden and impact of arthritis to: • State program managers • Health officials • Decision-makers • Various community sectors • Program delivery partners • Voluntary health organization staff • Information from a literature review and BRFSS data is used to produce data reports in a fact-sheet format
Key Components • Involve partners in fact sheet planning stages and dissemination plans and efforts • Perform a thorough literature review • Identify key messages and public health strategies to reduce the burden and impact of arthritis • Where applicable, include opportunities for cross chronic disease integration messaging • Provide information in various forms (print and internet) • Allow blank space for partner customization/program marketing • Update fact sheets as new BFRSS data, MMWRs, and journal articles become available
Fact Sheet Structure • Presented in a series of five special topics fact sheets: • Self-Management • Physical Activity • Work • Weight • California • Each fact sheet is formatted, when applicable, to include: • Apublic health message • Burden and impact data • Public health strategies • Healthy People 2010 objective(s), • Personal message from a Californian with arthritis.

From Our Partners • Responses to the fact sheet series has been overwhelming positive by supporting partners, systems partners, funders, other chronic disease programs, and state arthritis programs. • Community partners distribute fact sheets with board members, county health departments, potential program partners, legislative visits, and health fairs. • Nonprofit partners use fact sheet information in grant proposals and responding to media inquires to further strengthen arthritis awareness.
