  2. 1 Nephi 7:17-20 . . . “Our brother is a fool, for he thinketh that he can build a ship; yea, and he also thinketh that he can cross these great waters.”   “And thus my brethren did complain against me, and were desirous that they might not labor, for they did not believe that I could build a ship.”

  3. “I was exceedingly sorrowful because of the hardness of their hearts; and now when they saw that I began to be sorrowful they were glad in their hearts, insomuch that they did rejoice over me, saying: We knew that ye could not construct a ship, for we knew that ye were lacking in judgment; wherefore, thou canst not accomplish so great a work.”

  4.   . . . “thou art like unto our father, led away by the foolish imaginations of his heart; yea, he hath led us out of the land of Jerusalem”. . .

  9. What would you like to do?What one behavior, if you were to change it, would make the most difference in your life? MilestonesThese are the steps that will take longer than a week, or the goals that you are not quite ready to make an action step today. Action StepsThese are the goals that can be accomplished now, today, tomorrow, within the week.

  10. Action Steps – SMARTER • Specific • Measurable • Attainable • Relevant • Timely • Evaluate • Reward/Re-Evaluate

  11. Specific • Goals are not reached because they are either not specific or measurable. • Small and simple steps lead to great success. . . . “By small and simple things are great things brought to pass; and small means in many instances doth confound the wise.” Alma 37:6

  12. Measurable • Approach goal setting with the idea that you will account for your efforts to your support system. “When performance is measured, performance improves. When performance is measured and reported the rate of improvement accelerates.” Pres. Monson • Chart behavior and progress to see improvement. • Keep goals meaningful and motivating, but yet • manageable.

  13. Attainable • Avoid setting goals that are dependent upon someone else’s actions. Remember, you are the driver, you need to be in control. • Stretch yourself, but keep it simple. • Keep goals appropriate. • You need to agree on the goal. • Be ambitious in setting goals and limitations.

  14. Relevant • Set meaningful goals. Is the goal leading to the desired end result? • Focus on behaviors rather than internal qualities. • Be optimistic, but challenge yourself to succeed. If goals are unrealistic, discouragement sets in, which leads to abandoned goals.

  15. Time • Have a specific time table – when do you want to have your goal achieved. • Set action steps that can be accomplished within the week they are set.

  16. Evaluate – Accountability • Accountability: Only you can be responsible for reaching goals. Never blame others for difficult circumstances or lack of progress. • Accountability influences how you begin, how you think and feel about your goals, and how well you endure. • Your attitude toward your goal is a reflection of your commitment to changing your life. • Goals leading toward the desired end result should be enjoyable and/or exciting.

  17. Reward or Re-evaluate • Reward yourself! Especially for small accomplishments. • Make periodic evaluations: - Are you on track with your timetable - If you are having difficulty: answer why - Assess whether or not to revise your plan.
