Brown, North Campus, University of Michigan Abstract: The water industry is currently in transition from bringing mainly ‘dissipation’ of waste towards managing integrated resource recovery. We currently experience lots of ongoing incremental approaches, but need to come to the entire closing of the water cycle by designing the ‘used water factory’. Moreover, we must develop the market pull side of the services and products that can be obtained. Yet, we must be aware that such recovery products face severe regulatory and also cultural difficulties. Process lines which can overcome the latter will have to be given priority. Finally, it should be kept in mind that the major driver for the transition is the need to abate climate change.
