1. Children’s Health Research Summit: Introduction to UTHSCSA SON Clinical Scientists – January 28, 2008 Faculty who are available to participate as members of transdisciplinary research teams. Many have more than 10 years experience with Phase I and II Trials to develop behavioral interventions and/or with Type 2 Translational Research clinical studies to place evidence-based behavioral interventions into community settings. Many are experts in Community-Based Participatory Research

2. Community Outreach Clinic • Cooperative venture between AVANCE San Antonio and University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio School of Nursing • Mission is to meet the health care needs of an underserved, poor, predominantly Hispanic population • Pediatric Nurse Practitioner provides primary care, immunizations, Texas Health Steps, and illness care to children ages 0-3 enrolled in the AVANCE programs • Located at the Castroville Road Day Care site, the clinic is open only on Tuesdays 8-5 until additional funding can be found • Contact: Dr. Kay Avant, Chair, Family Department, SON AvantK@uthscsa.edu

3. Nurse Family Partnership • Research based, nurse-run protocol of case management for poor, underserved first time mothers from pregnancy through the infant’s third birthday • UTHSCSA School of Nursing is working with a number of other agencies in the community to apply for funding to provide this program to 200 families in San Antonio • Contact: Dr. Kay Avant, Chair, Family Department, SON AvantK@uthscsa.edu

Healy Murphy Center • Parenting • Funding: St. Luke’s Health Ministry; Baptist Health Foundation • Healy Murphy Center is an alternative school (SAISD) for pregnant and parenting teens, both male and female. There is an attached day care that serves the students as well as low income families in San Antonio. Two School of Nursing faculty conduct a weekly Well Baby Clinic ((Dr. Champion) and a weekly Well Mommy Clinic (Dr. Gill) . Dr. Gill teaches parenting classes to all pregnant and parenting teens one day a week.

Goals for the Project Develop baseline data for risk behavior, victimization, trauma, & family functioning in minority children who have been exposed to domestic violence Assess cultural and age appropriateness of four data collection instruments for 200 Hispanic, White, non-Hispanic, and Black youth.
