Millennial Students: Who Are They? Dr. Tammy McGuckin & Dr. Tom Westcott Board of Trustees Meeting March 25, 2011
Who Are The Millennials? Generations: The History of America’s Future, 1584 to 2069 (Howe and Strauss, 1991) • Millennials (Gen Y) were born between 1980 and 2004 • Clint Eastwood is better known as a Movie Director than as Dirty Harry. • Unless found in their grandparents’ attic, they have never seen a carousel of Kodachrome slides. • Czechoslovakia has never existed in their lifetime. • Russians & Americans have always lived in space together. • Ruth Bader Ginsburg has always been on the Supreme Court.
Who Are The Millennials? Special Sheltered Confident Team-Oriented Conventional Pressured Achieving
Who Are The Millennials? • They are comfortable with authority and they rarely challenge anything in the classroom (but they believe everything is negotiable) • They fear failure, resist risk taking, have a hard time thinking outside of the box, and are uncomfortable with ambiguity (What will be on the test?) • They make decisions with the assistance of their parents (birth of the Helicopter Parents – hovering, ultra protective, unwilling to let go)
Who Are The Millennials? • Teamwork rules over individualism • They believe they are the ultimate multitaskers – overconfident belief that they can multitask with no decrement in performance • They desire instant gratification and expect instant responses to their inquiries (Why haven’t you responded to the email I sent 30 minutes ago?) • High sense of entitlement
Who Are The Millennials? • They possess strong technical skills but many have low self-efficacy. • “One out of three college freshmen reported feeling ‘frequently overwhelmed’ in 2001, twice as many as in the 1980’s.” (from Generation Me, Twenge, 2006) • “improvements in treatment, medications, and understanding of mental disorders have made higher education more attainable for many people with psychological disorders.” (from College Student Mental Health, Benton & Benton, 2006)
Who Are The Millennials? According to The Changing American College Student Thirty Year Trends: 1966 to 1996 (Alexander Astin): • In 1967, 86% of college students believed that “developing a meaningful philosophy of life” was the most important value, while 42% of college students believed that “being well off financially” was an important value. • Conversely, in 1996, only 42% believed that “developing a meaningful philosophy of life”was important, while 74% believed “being well off financially” was important.
