  1. National Grid for Culture, Education and Societal Services A disruptive communication model for mediabased services in a Sustainable Society Based on the Folkets Hubb/Community Hub vision from 1999 Mats Erixon, CTOCentre for Sustainable Communications Presented at

  2. We suggest using existing infrastructures to create access and involvement in a balanced society • A National Grid to deliver mediabased services • Uncompressed services simplifies for latency • Uncompressed services have low/no codec costs • Use available public infrastructure for backbone to regions • Mix fibre, lambdas and STM16 to deliver • Local operators to tie to users • Large room applications in cinemas, schools et cetera • Small room applications in high traffic sites

  3. Community Hub Focus- a local service delivery point Vision Large Room Events IP-support & Community Networking Small Room For everybody 270 – 1500 Mbit/s 10-100 Mbit/s xDSL 25 – 270 Mbit/s D-Cinema Opera E-government FTTH Tele-Doctor Education Medical logs Theatre Camera control Professional support Religion Cross border communication Sports IP- TV &video IP-Media transport Eye-commerce

  6. Is it really possible to use STM-16 and fibre to deliver rural services? • The incumbents are not getting it – again! • ”We only deliver STM16 to other operators” (TeliaSonera + Telenor) • ”We charge an arm and a leg”…. (KPN and others) • Community Hub had an academic demo platform built over 3000km of incumbent fibre • Now it’s moved to other suppliers with alternatives • You can build if you really want • Telia International Carrier is doing it

  15. Making Swedes in Amsterdam homesick using HDTV Sandhamn- IBC Amsterdam 6-13/9 2006

  16. On site in Amsterdam From archipelago village Sandhamn we use Stokabfiber provided by Nilings to Stockholm and KTH. From there Telia International Carrier takes the STM16 2,5 Gbit/s to Amsterdam where KPN took the bulk of the budget for the last miles.Netinsight end equipment and a few Transmode repeaters for the in the archipelago connection. Sandhamns Hotell tower Canon XL H1 with HD-SDI well wrapped in plastic. Downstairs a Netinsight Nimbra 340-HD and a 40km SFP for the first leg to next island node Ljusterö.

  18. DTM-solution – on STM16 2,5Gbit/sFor IBC 2007 we will run their 10Gbit/s version capable of 6 HD-SDI or maybe 4 dual-link 3Gbit/s mapped to 9,5Gbit/s for 4k live distribution. This will be in collaboration with the Visualive/Cinegrid communities using available lambdas in Europe, US and to Japan. Fibre to the user Cheap simple HDTV-camera …or expensive very good HDTV camera Internet and dataswitch Analog-digital converter for audio and video Cinema Sound System For 4K we currently use Olympus live cameras delivering 4xHD-SDI over JPEG2000 compressed Gbit IP-connections dispalyed on Sony 4K projectors. Target is RED 4K cameras and 10Gbit/s STM64 to Thomson/Grass Valley or Sony projectors. PA-sound

  24. What to do now? • Make telcom operators understand that STM16 is a standard delivery – and make them price it right • Make municipal networks understand not to sell out • Make authorities understand how to produce their presence • Involve traditional media competence • Push for low latecy digital video displays and cameras • HP and Cisco believes they see the light – make them look the right way to make eye contact Mats Erixon, mex@kth.se Centre for Sustainable Communications, KTH
