ICP M&MCoordination Center for EffectsProgress of workunder the medium term WGE work plan for the ICP M&M, 2002-2005Jean-Paul Hettelingh, TFIAM, 7-9 May 2003, Haarlem, The Netherlands. Contents: Dynamic modelling Critical loads for heavy metals
Dynamic modelling • Production of Dynamic Modelling Manual (CCE rep.) • 2002 Call for CLO + DynMod data Objective: • Familiarize NFCs with increasing complexity • Encourage consistency between critical loads and dynamic modelling input parameters in the extended European database Preliminary results (as of Yesterday) • 18 countries submitted CLO data (out of 24 NFCs) • 9 of which included Dynamic Modelling data • Others need more preparation aiming for 2003 call
Dynamic Modelling - near future • ICP M&M meetings 19-23 May 2003, Estonia includes NFC training for 2003 call • 2003 Call for CLO + DynMod data (Oct/Nov ‘03) Objective: • Step up input consistency between CLO & DynMod. • Generate Dynamic Modelling outputs for possible use in IAM (likely socalled target load functions), as appropriate and required Collaboration outside WGE includes: • Historic emission/deposition trends (MSC-W; CIAM) • Target load function algorithm (CIAM)
Target load functions: Similar to critical load functions (for infinite time horizon) compute functions for e.g. 4 different target years, 2020-2050, in which a chemical criterion has to be met (e.g. Al:Bc<1) ….
Critical loads for heavy metals • 2002 preliminary results (CCE report) of ICP M&M call led to... • ...Further methodological development (Expert Group): (a) Review of the harmonised set of critical limits for heavy metals for soils and waters, whereby inclusion of limits for Hg and of human health effects; (b) Further development of transfer functions of Pb, Cd and Hg for soils and sediments, with emphasis on their applicability to the broad spectrum of European soils; (c) General methodological aspects, including • methods to consider heavy metal inputs to soils and surface waters other than atmospheric pollution, • requirements for and applicability of an effect-based approach for Hg
Critical loads for heavy metals - nearfuture IAM relevant objectives (before spring 2004) include • Improve critical limits for ecotoxicological effects for Cd, Pb and Hg in soils and surface waters • Explore possibilities to use human health as end-point ... • Hg in surface waters (Hg content in fish) • Food quality criteria for assessing allowable Cd content in crops (e.g. pathway via wheat) [Pb …] • WHO drinking water limits for Cd, Pb and Hg • …implies the distinct modelling and mapping of critical loads for forest soils (ecotoxicology) and agricultural soils (human health). • Intended CCE call for data in autumn 2004 Yet unresolved issues for use in IAM include: • Exceedance assessments for agri-soils requires knowledge of non-atmospheric inputs (fertilization) ! Data requirements on e.g. agricultural practices are beyond WGE-ICP M&M domain.
