  3. What is a Run-on Sentence? A sentence must have a subject, a verb, and be a complete thought. Each sentence contains only one thought. If more than one complete thought or sentence runs into another complete thought, it is called a run-on sentence.

  4. What is a Run-on Sentence? Take a look at this example. The cat runs fast it chases the toy. There is more than one complete thought here. The first thought is: “The cat runs fast.” The second thought is: “It chases the toy.” These are both sentences. Two sentences cannot be placed side by side without proper connection. If they are, it is called a run-on sentence.

  5. Locating Run-on Sentences • Is this a run-on sentence? The car raced down the track it swerved to avoid the accident. How many sentences are there? “The car raced down the track” is a sentence. “It swerved to avoid the accident” is a sentence. Is there proper connection between the sentences? No. This is a run-on sentence.

  6. Locating Run-on Sentences • Is this a run-on sentence? Walking down the street, I saw a chipmunk How many sentences are there? “Walking down the street “is not a sentence. It is a fragment. “I saw a chipmunk” is a sentence. There is only one sentence. This is not a run-on sentence.

  7. Locating Run-on Sentences • Is this a run-on sentence? I like spaghetti Italian food is my favorite. How many sentences are there? “I like spaghetti” is a sentence. “Italian food is my favorite” is a sentence. There is no proper connection between these sentences. This is a run-on sentence.

  8. Locating Run-on Sentences • Is this a run-on sentence? I like pizza and especially with pepperoni. How many sentences are there? “I like pizza and especially with pepperoni” is one sentence. The “and” links parts of one sentence. There is only one sentence. This is not a run-on sentence.

  9. Correcting Run-on Sentences • When two sentences collide to form a run-on sentence, three methods can be used to correct the sentence problem. 1. Separate the two sentences. Use end punctuation and proper capitalization to make two sentences. 2. Add a comma and a conjunction to properly join the two sentences. Conjunctions commonly used are and, but, or, for, so. 3. Use a semicolon if the two sentences are closely related in meaning. The word after the semicolon is not capitalized unless it is a proper noun.

  10. Correcting Run-on Sentences Fix this run on sentence. Dogs are man’s best friend I have a black lab. First, decide where the two sentences run into each other. First sentence – Dogs are man’s best friend. Second sentence – I have a black lab. Then, decide which method would work best. This run-on would best be corrected by making two separate sentences. Make sure to punctuate and capitalize properly! Corrected: Dogs are man’s best friend. I have a black lab.

  11. Correcting Run-on Sentences Fix this run on sentence. I love television I watch it for hours each evening. First, decide where the two sentences run into each other. First sentence – I love television. Second sentence – I watch it for hours each evening. Then, decide which method would work best. This run-on would best be corrected by using a conjunction to connect the ideas since they fit well together. Remember, when two sentences are connected by a conjunction, a comma must be placed before the conjunction. Corrected: I love television, and I watch it for hours each evening..

  12. Correcting Run-on Sentences Fix this run on sentence. I enjoy reading mysteries The Westing Game is my favorite one. First, decide where the two sentences run into each other. First sentence – I enjoy reading mysteries. Second sentence – The Westing Game is my favorite one. Then, decide which method would work best. This run-on would best be corrected by using a semicolon. The two sentences are closely related. Normally, the first word of the second sentence would not be capitalized after a semicolon, but since this one is a title, it must remain capitalized. Corrected: I enjoy reading mysteries; The Westing Game is my favorite one.
