  2. Distance • Distance is defined by how far a moving body travels along a path, it’s the measurement of the path travelled from the starting to the finish point. • For example: • - 100 m sprint: Distance = 100 m • - Jog around a 20x30 metre building: Distance = 100 m • - 3 km cross country run: Distance = 3000 m • In all cases you can see that how far an object travels is its distance.

  3. Displacement • Displacement is defined as the shortest measurement between a moving object’s beginning and final position, a straight-line (visually) that leads from point A to B. • To calculate displacement the direction(s) of the object must be known. • For example: • - 100 m sprint north: Displacement = 100 m north • - Jog around a 20x30 metre building facing north: Displacement = 0 m • - 3 km cross country run north: Displacement = 3000 m north • - 30 m jog north followed by a 40 m jog to east : Displacement: 50 m north-east • You can see that distance and displacement do vary and it depends on path that an object travels.

  4. Relationship between Distance and Displacement • Distance and Displacement both measure how far a moving body travels. • Distance defines the overall path a body travels while displacement shows the overall change in position. • Distance will always be greater than displacement or equal to • Distance > Displacement • In this case the distance is 7 m, displacement is 5 m. • Distance and Displacement are equal when a body travels in one direction.

  6. Questions • What is the distance for a car travelling 20km/h for 3.5 hours. • What is the displacement for a car 20km/h for 3.5 hours north, then 30km/h east for 1.5 hours to the nearest meter. • What is the displacement for a 400 m race on a 400 m track, and the distance. • What is the relative distance and displacement for a 5000 m rowing race down a straight river.
