„Dušičky“ Day of the Dead
I interviewed my grandfather • My grandfather‘s name is Antonín. • He is 71 years old. • He lives in OstrožskáNováVes in the Czech Republic. • I asked him about the celebration of the Day of the Dead , in the Czech Republic called „Dušičky“. H i
My grandfather told to me that .. • Before "Dušičky" the graves were cleaned and decorated with flowers and candles • Before the Velvet Revolution only chrysanthemums wreaths and bouquets were put on graves • Today a lot of different decorations are available on the market
„Dušičky“ • This holiday has been celebrated since 10th century. • It is a Christian holiday, originally called “All Saints Day “ and it is celebrated on 2nd November.
Special church ceremonies for this day. • We remember people who died. • It is celebrated by believers and atheists as well.
Many Czechs travel long distances to visit the graveyards • They decorate the graves bringing flowers and lighting candles to commemorate the dead • Graveyards are very atmospheric after dark with thousands of glowing candles
Halloween • And how is this event similar to Halloween? • They both commemorate dead people. • The symbols are candles and lanterns made of orange pumpkins
Dušičky • Celebrated on 2ndNovember • Quietcommemoration • Churchservices • Prayers • Halloween • Celebrated on 31st October • Trick-or-treating • Costumeparties • Lightingbonfires
In the Czech Republic still a lot of people keep the tradition of „Dušičky“ • More and more young people are influenced by American Halloween and celebrate it as in the USA • We organize Halloween parties with scary costumes
In our school we also celebrate Halloween. In the photo there are students and our headmaster.
E S E A R T EASTER
I interviewed my grandmother • I asked my grandmother about a celebration of Easter. • My grandmother´s name is Danuše. • She is 73 years old. • She lives in a family house in a small villageofKněžpole.
Why and when do people celebrate Easter ? • religious holiday • it celebrates the day of Christ´s death and his return to the life • after the first spring full moon on Sunday and Monday
Traditional food • sweet cake called ,,mazanec“ • small plain sweet called ,,Jidáše“ • sweet cake in a shape of lamb called ,,beránek“ Mazanec Jidáše
How do you remember Easter celebration in your childhood? • Green Thursday • Peopleate something green, mostly spinach • Parents bought spring shoes, jackets and something useful for children
Good Friday • Christ´s death • People had fasting, theyate only bread • and water – this tradition was kept in each family • Bells in church stopped tolling onFridayand Saturday
Saturday • Church bells didn´t toll ,,bells flied to Rome“ • Girls with mothers baked a cake ,,mazanec“ and decorated eggs called „kraslice“ • Boys with fathers made Easter whips called „pomlázka“ • At midnight bells started tolling again Mazanec Kraslice
Easter Sunday • Christ´s return to the life • People went to church and prayed for him
Easter Monday • Boys went from house to house, visited girls and whipped girls to be healthy and beautiful • Girls gave them coloured eggs – calledkraslice • In some regions boys poured girls with water
What are the differences beatween Easter now and in the past • Nowadays • Boys usually get not only eggs but also money and some refreshment especially alcoholic drinks . Mostly they get drunk. • Families spend much money for Easter. They buy chocolate eggs, many sweets, much alcohol • In the past • When boys went from house to house to whip girls, they got only coloured eggs from them • Girls only prepared eggs and baked a cake for boys, families spent time together at home or they went to church.
